Beautiful Brides: Mary Connealy

Many of you love Mary Connealy's sweet, funny, historicals! Here's how charming her own romance turned out!

Mary writes:

Ivan and I met in eighth grade at a country school track meet.

We both attended one-room country schools (different ones) through eighth grade, then went to high school together.

We were friends in high school and ran around in a group, then we finally started dating near the end of our junior year.

We dated for four years while I rushed through college, a few ups and downs in those years but we managed to get through it because I believed he was truly the man God had chosen for me to marry...and still do.

We were engaged two months and still managed to have a full, formal wedding. He proposed on Thanksgiving weekend and we were married at the end of January.

(RH: Wow! That's awesome!)

My sister made the wedding dress for her wedding in August on one of the hottest days in the history of the planet, then I wore it in January on a day so bitter cold our honeymoon goal was to drive south until we got warm. We gave up in Texas and just turned around and came home.

(RH: LOL)

Another sister wore the same wedding dress two years later. I made that veil, which is just a circle of cloth that I hand stitched lace onto.

(RH: What a special thing to share with your sisters!)

We went shopping together for my engagement and wedding ring, so there was no SURPRISE proposal. I did tell him I wanted to be 'proposed to' though. So, sitting in his car in my parents' driveway, he asked me to marry him.

I said yes.

Then I asked him if he wanted to ask my father for my hand. (my older sister's boyfriend had done that)

And Ivan said, "Nah, Jack'll let me marry you."

Which, let's face it, was absolutely true.

Beautiful Brides: Tamera Alexander

Tamera Alexander is one of the sweetest women I know. But she also possesses a sharp, funny wit. Here's some great pictures from her wedding day. Isn't she gorgeous?

Tammy writes:

Hey friends, 

Let me start off by saying: Arranged marriages still work!

I met my sweet mother-in-law, Claudette Harris Alexander, before I ever met my husband, Joe. 


Here's where that went... 

Claudette was my girl's club sponsor at Harding University, and over my four years there, she was a real encouragement to me. So when it came time to graduate, I asked Claudette and her husband if they'd like to get together for breakfast and meet my parents.


The five of us got together and oh, what a time my mom, June, and Claudette had! To say they "hit it off" is an understatement. As we were finishing breakfast, mom leaned over, patted Claudette's arm and said, "I wish you had a son!" Claudette perked up immediately and said, "I do! I do have a son!" And that was it... 

Claudette called Joe, who was living in Fort Worth at the time, and left my name and number on his machine. Well, Joe says that he "remembered having seen me in church a couple of years earlier." (Bless that man's heart!) And that he'd asked his sister (who I sang in choir with) about me. But I was dating someone else at the time, and Joe and I never ended up meeting… Until God's timing was right! 

I'm so grateful our mothers––who are both with the Lord now, together, waiting for us on the other side––and for the hand they had in helping their son and daughter "find" each other. 

Speed ahead about a year... 

The wedding went off without a hitch. Everything as planned. 


Then as Joe and I were leaving, we were getting into the car when we heard a "rustle" in the back seat. 


Out popped Laura Hall, a dear woman who had been like a surrogate grandmother to me for years. She'd been hiding back there for who knows how long, determined to go on the honeymoon with us. LOL!

Laura went Home years ago, but I think of her so often, and remember how we used to go to a little Greek restaurant called Athens (in Atlanta) before heading to the Silver Screen to watch old movies. 


I look forward to seeing her again…someday. Laura, a widow herself for many years, really mentored me for marriage, even before I met my husband. 

Just goes to show how God is always working… Gotta love it!

Beautiful Brides: Robin Lee Hatcher

Continuing the tour of beautiful brides... Here's Robin Lee Hatcher in '89! Doesn't she look great?

Robin writes:

First a note about my wedding dress. It was purchased for and worn first by my 5' 10" eldest daughter.

Two years later, I wore it (as I am under 5' 6" it had to be shortened plus I used a belled slip). The year after me, my youngest daughter wore it; she's 5' 8" and very thin, so the dress had to be taken in and she didn't wear a slip so that the length would work.

One is of us cutting the cake. It is pretty standard fair.

The second is my favorite photo from the wedding. Here's the story about that one: Jerry was a complete basket case before the wedding. He was so nervous during the ceremony.

But the instant the minister declared us man and wife, he relaxed and started having fun. We had finished taking all of the photographs in the sanctuary and I was headed outside to toss the bouquet.

I passed my beautiful big bouquet to Jerry and picked up the "throw away" bouquet to take outside.

The photographer and videographer were about to follow me. Then people started to laugh and the photographer went back. I turned around and there was Jerry, lying on the dais with my wedding bouquet looking like one for a funeral.

So I did a Perils of Pauline, woe-is-me pose and they shot some photos of us. Behind that hand, I was laughing like crazy.

Last but not least, this photo was when the ladies from my romance writers chapter asked for a romantic pose, so Jerry gave them one.

Beautiful Brides: Deborah Raney

Being as I wrote a book about four brides and a wedding dress, I asked some author friends to share their wedding pictures and stories with me. Now I'm sharing them with you!

First up, the beautiful Deborah Raney!

"When I met Ken Raney and it was almost love at first sight. We dated all summer, but in the fall, we went off to different colleges 60 miles apart (Ken is 2 years older than I am and was starting his junior year).

But we'd already fallen hard for each other and had even started using the "M" word. In October Ken planned to come visit me at my college and wrote to tell me he was bringing me something exciting.

He gave me clues: round, shiny, hole in the middle, and it would always make me think of him.

Well, woohoo, I polished my fingernails and prepared to receive my engagement ring! WRONG.

You know what that man brought me? A Monkee's record album. (Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!) He thought this was SOOOO funny.

(RH: LOL!!)

Well, it was round, shiny, had a hole in the middle and had a stupid song on it that was supposed to make me think of him. I was NOT amused.

But we DID get engaged that Thanksgiving and I got my diamond for Christmas. We married the following August, 1974. Almost 38 years now!

On Being Selfish and Selfless

One of the things I love about being a writer is digging deep to give wisdom and meaning to my characters in dialog and action that's not trite or expressly something I would say or do.

While I'm pro life, I had to write convincing pro choice dialog for the book The Sweet By and By when my heroine was discussing why her Mama took her for an abortion an sixteen.

I am good at seeing multiple sides. Which is helpful yet frustrating.

Anyway, writing a scene yesterday, the heroine challenged the hero on being selfish. I can't remember what she said exactly at this moment but it sparked something in me.

Selfishness comes from what we want to do or be. Our desires and dreams energize our focus on self and where we want to go. We wind up comparing ourselves to others and feeling like failures for no good reason.

Perhaps a friend is a CEO for a major corporation while you're still at lower level management. Or another person you know started his own company but you're still working for "the man."

A friend is good with finances while you can't seem to save a quarter. So we get dissatisfied and grumble. We start to turn in and think of ourselves. If we don't succeed then we must be failing.

Selfishness is really about "me." And the "me world" is really rooted in fear and pride that I might just "lose myself and become nothing." That if I don't toot my own horn, chase my own dreams, do what I got to do, then I'll die in the dirt and no one will remember me.

This is why I follow Jesus. I can give of myself freely without losing myself. Granted, it's hard and I'm FAR from perfect but I don't have to toot my horn, He will.

If I focus on loving others, He will see to my needs. If I ask Him to increase in me so I can decrease, He'll accomplish the works of my hands.

See, we think if we surrender God automatically sits us on the bench. But the opposite is true. It's when we surrender, become selfless, He gives us a job to do and calls us into the game.

The best part? We don't have to worry about success or failure because He takes care of us. We don't have to worry about dying in the dust forgotten because He remembers us. We don't have to worry about leaving our mark in the world because this life is a vapor.

It's an internship for the Life to come. That is where we will really see and be rewarded. Did you work an internship in college? I did. A couple of them. I'm glad I did. Glad to have worked hard and earned a good grade, but it was not my ultimate career.

Can you imagine if I worked in internship with the force and drive of a forty year career?The intern people would throw a party when the school quarter ended. An internship is to die to self, to learn, to prepare for the work place.

That's this life. To die to self. To prepare and learn for the age to come.

Eternity is a long time to make up for anything you lost or didn't get in this short 70-80 year life.

Be selfless. Trust me, it will pay off in the eternal run!

Thoughts on Writing Today

Need to edit about 30 pages. Fifty would be better. Sometimes it goes quickly, other times I have to cut and rewrite.

It's hard in this final stage. Last rewriting before turning the book in. I'm not sure if the book is good or if I want it to be good.

I'm so close to it, reading every work, dissecting every sentence, I get weary and bogged down in the "weeds."

"Is this boring? I feel exhausted."

So. I've done this enough times to know it's part of the process. I plod along.

Meanwhile, The Wedding Dress releases in a few weeks! So excited!

Standing n the Surf

I love this image. Standing on the edge of a turbulent surf, watching, the storm roll in. As I took this picture of friend Beth Vogt, I imagined for a moment I was not on shore but out at sea.

I wondered how high and how strong the waves crashed two, three, a hundred miles into the Gulf. No land in sight. No light to guide a ship.

I was comforted to have my feet were on terra slipping-sanda. ;) And deepened my resolve to never go on a cruise.

We have many conveniences today that ease the mind of a sailor at sea in a storm. Of a woman on the shore with her toes barely touching the surf. Of a parent who worries over his child.

The good, the bad, the pretty, the ugly, we all have some form of coping. We have some "technology" be it meds, music, technology, entertainment of all kinds, that kind of act as our "shore" in turbulent times.

As I've learned more lately about politics, our gov't, our President, my heart as often felt faint. I think I've made a safe place for my heart out of something that's shifting, washing away like the sand under my feet.

I've pledged alligence to things, people and places that do not really love me in return. TV doesn't love me. My iPhone doesn't. My local and national representatives don't love me. My governor and president don't love me.

They are not my source of strength and peace.

Jesus is my one true love. He's the only one whom I can truly lean upon in turbulent times. When I'm concerned or scared. When I see the dark clouds on the horizon, I trust He's got it all in command.

My job is to align my heart with His. And gratefully, He's able to do that for and with me, too.

What about you? What are your go-to sources for comfort instead of Jesus? He died for you, could you die a little to yourself for Him? All He wants is your heart.

Peace

The word peace shows up in the Bible something like 249 times. Jesus is the Prince of Peace.

Lying awake at 2:30 a.m. this morning, I meditated on Psalm 4:8.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, LORD,

make me dwell in safety.

In a world of anxiety and turmoil, mounting fear, and content worry, I think the Lord wants us to remember He is a God of peace and safety for our hearts and minds.

Fix on Him instead of your troubles. Instead of your worries. Even instead of your physical aliments.

Peace.

Black Christian Fiction Author Parade: Rhonda Bowen

Today Black Christian Fiction Authors on Parade brings you author Rhonda Bowen.

Rhonda is one of the newer authors on this year's parade. Although she hasn't been writing long, only beginning her writing journey in 2008, she hasn't wasted any time. After completing her first novel, some time in 2009, she was unsure what to do next, given that she lives in Canada and most of the commercial African American fiction with which she was familiar was published in the U.S.

But Rhonda is a resourceful and adventurous person. A public relations professional and event planner, she recently spent a year in Thailand teaching English as a second language to school children. Rhonda is definitely not the type of person to twiddle her thumbs for too long.

Instead, she sent her manuscript out and to her surprise, she got a call from her current publisher, Kensington Books. Shortly thereafter, her debut novel,Man Enough For Me, was released.

Jules Jackson is more or less satisfied with her life. Sure, her job as a Toronto based publicist can get pretty hectic, and her relationship with her mom is less than perfect. But her relationship with God is enough to get her through those minor patches. Yes, she is pretty content. That is until the night she meets Germaine Williams while promoting a client who is performing at Germaine's lounge. Before she knows it, she is throwing caution to the wind, and falling hard for a man she has just met.

But Germaine isn't all that he seems, and when Jules start asking questions, things start getting more complicated than she planned for.With everything in her life up in the air, she must decide whether she is willing to give up what is sure for something and someone that is more than she could ever ask for.

Man Enough For Me represented a fresh voice in the Christian fiction market, informed by Rhonda's multicultural background--born in Jamaica, reared and living in Toronto, and having spent nearly a year in Asia.

This month, Rhonda's second novel, One Way Or Another, was released. As in her first novel, Rhonda again writes about real Christian women in realistic situations. As to her inspiration, Rhonda says, "A couple years ago I was attending a youth event where a young man gave a testimony about how he walked away from God as a teenager, got involved in a lot of criminal activity, but eventually came back to Christ in his adolescent years. The story he told of the consequences to his actions not only while he was involved in illegal activity, but even after he came back to God inspired me to write.

Laughter: The best medicine

I sat with my friend Susie last night in a weird, tall, ugly room (yes, it was tall, weird I know) with bold overhead lighting debriefing from the week... thinking out-loud how the Deep Thinker's Retreat was going so far.

With the technical details and issues, thoughts and adjustments, aside our conversation paused... Susie glanced at her email.

"Oh, here, let me read you this," she said.

She read a clip from an email that just hit us funny. We started laughing which led to banter which led to more laughter, more banter, more laughter.

I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt. My throat ached.

I needed to laugh. I felt different. I'd taken my medicine. No sugar required. Just a friend. A spark. And a willing heart.

Do you need a good laugh? Be willing, first, then go out and find a way to make merry!

Black Christian Fiction Authors Parade! Shawneda Marks

Shawneda Marks, in her own words, "has loved reading and writing since she can remember." Always a storyteller, after years of entertaining colleagues at Bank of America and Comcast with colorful stories about customer interactions, Shawneda decided to put pen to paper and write her own stories.

In addition to raising awareness, Shawneda's books are designed to explore wellness and equip readers to deal with weighty issues. The Pink Ribbon Collection deals with an increasingly prevalent disease, breast cancer. Book 1 is My True Essence and Book 2, scheduled for release in March 2012, is Embracing Myself Now. Again it continues the story of a group of characters from the first book in the series, in this case, four women who discover it's difficult to let go of what was having never expected what their lives have become.

Welcome to the third week of black Christian author parade. I'm delighted to be reposting from Patricia Wooside at Readin N Writin with Patricia.

Today's author on parade is Dwan Abrams.

Dwan Abrams is like a multi-faceted gemstone. There are so many sides to her, almost too many to count.

The woman is an author, freelance editor, publisher, writing coach, professional speaker and former radio show host.

That's not to mention being a mentor to middle school students, a community volunteer, a former fashion editor, a frequent writing conference panelist, a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and a mom.

Dwan began her publishing career with the release of Only True Love Waitswhich went on to become a bestseller and won the 2007 Pen of the Writer POWER Award for Best Fiction. (It will be rereleased this summer by Urban Christian.

She has written several other award-winning novels, publishing as a self-published author as well as with both small and large presses.

Divorcing the Devil peeked at #1 on the Black Expressions Christian Fiction Bestsellers list and has consistently ranked in its Top 25 Fiction Bestsellers list.

It also ranked #1 on the Top 25 Black Christian Book Distributors Independent Publishers Bestsellers list and was nominated for a 2008 African American Literary Award. (RH: Awesome!)

Black Christian Fiction Authors Parade! Stacy Hawkins Adams

The parade has begun! Today's featured author is Stacy Hawkins Adams.

Stacy Hawkins Adams burst on to the Christian fiction scene with Speak to My Heart in 2004.

This book began the Spirit and Soul series. What was interesting about that for me was that prior to this book being published, I'd not previously seen many--maybe not any--books by that particular publisher, Revell/Baker Books, which featured black characters. Stacy was a new author to me and I was intrigued.

It was also the year I began reviewing books online. Speak to My Heart was one of my first book reviews for a third-party site, SORMAG (Shades of Romance Magazine). Speak to My Heart went on to win SORMAG's Best New Multicultural Fiction Book of the Year for 2004.

Stacy completed that series, about a rising young professional who grapples with issues of identity and family as she moves from single to married to motherhood while also helping a friend deal with an abusive relationship, in Nothing But the Right Thingand Watercolored Pearls. More recently, she wrote the Jubiliant Soul series (The Someday List, Worth A Thousand Words and Dreams That Won't Let Go).

Stacy's books have received numerous awards and recognition, including being chosen as a Black Expressions Book Club Main Selection and a featured summer reading selection for Sybil's Book Club on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Her books have been nominated for a Library of Virginia Literary Award and been deemed bestsellers by Barnes & Noble, Black Expressions Book Club, and Essence Magazine.

I’ll also be hosting drawings for autographed copies of the book and other prizes with ties to Idaho and the story. We’ll have a party game with a grand prize of a Kindle Touch loaded with my two Women of Faith™ novels, The Perfect Life and Heart of Gold! I'll also be announcing an exciting new contest during the evening.
